It's amazing how they rarely consider reality when showing the rooms of a home. That would be a crazy upstairs of the house.

I know for fact at the ponderosa ranch that was for visitors. The upstairs wasn't there because they never built it. It was filmed somewhere else

I'm a South Florida native and lived in a typical 1950s nondescript suburban CBS home. There were several models for homebuyers to choose from - 2 bedroom cottage style with an eat-in kitchen and open carport. My 3 bedroom 1 bathroom house was one of the most popular. The bedrooms and bathroom were stacked in the hall. My mom lived in New York State in small towns. We would visit the town where many of her relatives lived. I told her I wanted to live in a small town too. She very quickly answered me with "No You Don't!! Everybody knows everybody's business!!!" We would have to drive in order to shop downtown in Hollywood, Florida. I like being able to walk to stores, shops, and restaurants. My parents had friends who lived in the downtown area, and I asked her why we didn't live there. Some of the houses over town were older, with more character and styles like Craftsman Bungalows and Spanish cottage style with elevated foundations, real wood floors where anything glass would vibrate if you walked too heavy!! Terracotta tiles were on the front steps, roofs, entryway. I wanted to know why we couldn't live there and my mom's answer was quite simple, it was out of our price range 😕.

Archie & Edith's bedroom shared a common wall with Mike & Gloria. In one episode, Archie put a glass against the wall to see if he could hear what Mike & Gloria were arguing about. Maybe that was an aberration. I don't know if the writers really had a floorplan in mind when writing scenes for upstairs.

You didn’t mention in your marvelous narration what several people alluded to in their comments - that there are no homes at all behind the monument - not for many, many miles. In fact, the rock formation upon which the busts were created drops off just behind the heads, with nothing but barren, rocky, unpopulated ground beyond them. Unlike the movie depiction, there is no plateau above and behind the monument upon which any house of any sort could be built, let alone one of such grandeur. But, as you’ve often mentioned, we just have to suspend our disbelief and go along with the storyline. Lovely tour.

I believe you said that Victor Sen Yung went from Bonanza to several Charlie Chan movies. Not so. You must be thinking of the Kung Fu TV series, done in the 1970’s, after the end of Bonanza. The Charlie Chan movies - with various actors rotating through the Charlie Chan role - was made from the 1930’s into the 1950’s - not the ‘70’s. Also, you mentioned that "for some reason" the color red appeared prominently in the Ponderosa decor. I can tell you the reason that red - and other bright colors - were used so visibly, in the home and throughout the exterior scenes as well: the emergence of color television throughout American homes in the ‘50s and ‘60s. In fact, I can remember my father and I being invited for dinner at a friend’s house nearly every week (Sunday, I believe). The friend (a retired banker, and quite well-to-do) had a big console color TV, while we just had an old black & white set. It was a real treat to enjoy dinner, then sit down in his huge living room, as if it were a theater, and watch that week’s color-filled Bonanza episode on their magnificent 25” console television, "in living color" on NBC. Every imaginable color seemed to be used - bright primary & pastel colors. It was the growth of color TV in America that brought that about.

In S2 E15, the bunkhouse is no longer next to the kitchen, but rather next to the office area to the right of the front door when facing it from the outside.

Chimney between den and front room doesnt appear in exterior shots.

I wonder what Frank Lloyd Wright would have thought of the design. Wright died the year the film was released, so it’s possible he was aware of it. Personally, I think the set designer did a superb job, honoring Wright’s masterwork, Fallingwater. But Wright was a different kind of cat, so it’s difficult to anticipate his reaction. He probably would have demanded a fee from Hitchcock.

The Cleavers were definitely not middle class, especially for that time. That is quite a house and yard.

It seems like the first two years (1957-58) were at one Radford studio and the rest at Universal, and there was a show where they moved. This I think is the second house. The kitchen appliances (oven and stovetop) are the very latest 1959 GE appliances with push buttons. Not sure about the refrigerator, but a square not rounded fridge with a bottom freezer was also the very latest and high end. The washer brand name is covered, but the dryer doesn't match and is higher end and probably newer. Obviously it was added later in the 50's! The double sinks in counters in both bathrooms would be very posh -usually seen only in the master bedroom bath. One thing lacking is a dishwasher which if the kitchen in a house like that was built or redone in 1959 would have been standard by then.

Chauncey Street is in Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Sty), an older area than any of Bensonhurst where they were supposed to live, quite different and several miles away. 328 Chauncey, Gleason's actual childhood address, was built in 1906. Bensonhurst is from around 1915 on.

Marina, would you consider doing a deep dive into Wes Anderson’s cinematic work?

For those who aren't familiar with Westport, it has a legacy of being upscale going back probably at least to the 1940s.

Oh, btw, I also grew up pretty close to Westport from the mid 1960s to the early 80s. A house like that in Westport probably would've gone for about $50K in the late fifties.

Nice update of the home. First I was scared it would be an open floor plan in white and gray with an enormous island. It was reassuring to see how a home could be refreshed in style.
